Commission a Portrait
Portrait Information
My goal is to create the most wonderful portraits that will be cherished for generations.
Our first step is to meet and discuss the specifications of the portrait: design, colors, clothes etc. If possible I like to see where the painting will be displayed in order to determine the right design, frame and lighting.
I take photographs myself, since the requirements of a painter are different from those of a photographer. I will need an hour with the subject, who should be dressed for the painting. Because of everybody’s busy schedules it is very difficult to paint from life and it requires a huge commitment. However, during the initial visit I would enjoy the opportunity to complete a head sketch in oil of the subject from life. Approximately 2 to 3 hours is needed to complete the sketch and can be done at a most any location. This is not required, but adds an additional resource that I find valuable when planning the final portrait. Back in my studio a small sketch of the painting including pose, composition, color scheme, etc. will also be completed and sent to the client for approval. These are not for likeness, but serve to illustrate the general approach to the finished portrait. Once the sketch is approved I begin work on the final painting using reference photos.
Framing
Once the painting is completed, it is very important that the portrait is properly framed. The right frame will enhance the painting. I will assist in selecting an appropriate archival-quality frame.
Payment
A 30% non-refundable deposit is required upon contract signing and the balance is due on completion of the portrait. For each additional person, add 70% of fee above.
Framing cost is paid by the client.
Prices
The price is based on the following criteria: the number of people in the painting, how much of each subject is to be depicted; the size of the actual painting; the clothing, jewelry and the complexity of the background.
